Hi everyone,
I finally got back to setting up my 128 after a few years of being busy. I've been upgrading it as best I can with a new thunder drive, 1750, etc. I have a uiec CF/IDE, as well. The 1581's work great, but the only 1571 I have is very flakey at best. I've been looking for wheels 128 and can't find anywhere to buy a copy so I found some to download on pokefinder. The only 4.4 version I've found is a .d64 boot disk and not a master disk. I'd really like to use wheels on my thunder drive in a native partition. Does anyone know where to go how to get this working? Any help would be great.
Cheers, c

Sorry I can't help. I get standard GEOS to work with new uIEC firmware, but not with my fast-serial firmware. In any case, I have not got Wheels working. I plan (for years now!) to update uIEC firmware to support both GEOS and fast-serial protocols... but even if I get it working, there is no gaurantee that Wheels would work.
Umm, can anybody get it to run in VICE? I think if it runs in an emulator, it would be *reasonably* possible to test what fails with real hardware....

You probably have seen this. cbm8bit.com/operating-systems/wheelsIn any case the two files called Wheelssc12842S1 and Wheelssc12842S2 are possibly the best copy of original disks although they are not master disks. The other two called Wheelssc12844S1 and the Wheelssc12844S2 are the same but updated to version 4.4. There is also a version WheelsHD which seems to be the one you may need. If it does not work I would start with the Wheelssc12842S1.d64 and use that to install. Then you can upgrade to wersion 4.4 The three jpg files are the instruction for the upgrade.

The cbm8bit.com/operating-systems/wheels was the place were I did find the wheels for the 128 first off. They're not master disks. But they boot fine as is. I have yet to actually create a '41 partition and see if I can mcopy (or something) the .d64 disk image to the drive and then have a separate native partition for all the geoprogammer/concept/Misc GEOS stuff. Sort of make the copy of the .d64 on the thunder drive sort of a boot partition, if you will. But a Master image would definitely make this moving Wheels stuff around and booting a lot easier. If I had the time, I'd make it a challenge to see how the stuff boots and maybe find my own solution to share. I'm confused with this uIEC, as well. Can it be used to directly/natively with all the space on the flash to boot GEOS/Wheels from, without the need to mount a GEOS image to boot from and swap out disk images? Kind of like using it as a HD? Completely lost in that area but I do know about the .dnp image or something like that. I've been playing around with my CentOS servers and have the kernels installed with OpenCBM controls hooked with an XM1541 cable. For reading the .Dx1 images I've installed a cbmfs fuser mount type. From there, I can mount the .Dx1 images and then I can copy the files to the 1581 in remarkably impressive time--the thing is wicked fast. And all from the command terminal. Unfortunately, my 1571 is too unreliable so I cannot just hook up the '71 and have OpenCBM do it all for me with one command or frontend. So I'm left with my 1581's, which OpenCBM has very limited control over--wish I could format the disks and everything like the other 5 1/4" drives can. I would really like to use my Pocket Writer software again :/ Is there a front end that is usable within native headless LINUX box? I would really like to get/create a no-nonsense C128 fast mode solution, like a midnight commander, that would logically log into a remote server via IP and then have the c128 navigate/copy disks/files/ as well as have the server mount images for navigating & copying. I also have a TFE Network card and a Lantronic Serial to ethernet thing, as well (I think I got that name correct, not sure as I'm at work on my lunch atm). Warpcopy with a JD'less 1581 is insanity---way way way too slow for any good. I've ordered two 1581 JD's which I'm hoping will land on my doorstep in the next week or so. I wish there was a fast 128 mode alternative. I have not found any c128 NIC solutions anywhere. I was going to get onto the IRC with GEOS this past weekend, but my server software was hogging most of my time and I never had a chance to try it out. This weekend I hope. Thanks for listening lol and helping. I'll see about getting this thing going and my main goal is getting it on the 128 and making it fast. Would like a Master disk tho... And any LINUX solutions that anyone has heard of for image copying. Cheers, c

I doubt that the uEIC can be used directly as I do not think there are GEOS configure files available for it. GEOS 2.0 would load from a real 1541 - 1571 - 1581 but because of the limitation of the kernel on the desktop it will only see something like 112 files (8 files in 14 pages). In any case refer to this thread. c-128.freeforums.net/thread/34/using-sd2iec-geosI found that OmniFlop www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/OmniFlop/OmniFlop.htm is a better solution to burn .D81 images instead of OpenCBM. It works with WXP. Unfortunately I am not familiar at all with any Linux solution for image copying.

If I remember right, TopDesk replacement of desktop could see more files.

I remember Topdesk. Good times. Off topic, does anyone know of a text based vdc mouse driver? Should I just use the one supplied on the demo disk and then make my own IRQ to move the cursor around with t he mouse on the vdc screen? If one's available I'd rather just use that one.

You could use a redefined character for your pointer and move it around the screen with the irq.

I was thinking about that, too--with the character redef. But it seems just as easy to actually move the blinking cursor around like the old DOS days (like Norton Commander). Why change what your brain is expecting to see. I'm thinking that I should start to program something to play around this. Something kinda unique and VDC'ish. I kinda have a little time on my hands (for a little while each week) now that my classes are finished up.

Thanks, NoneForNow, for updates and links! I will test how uIEC works or fails. But really, if we could get any version of Wheels to run reliably in VICE, then I think (hope) it would not be too much effort to make it run with generic CMD/uIEC devices... (without any REU because I don't own one...). Presumably it would work the same (better) with any REU (or similar like U1541-X).
