I agree, climate fluctuates a lot, and you can't trust all the "doom sayers" For example, motrucker gave us a link to a report via Yahoo which says "this is the worst [hottest] July on record"... but where I live, we never reached 100 °F all summer long this year (most years, we reach/exceed that value). So yeah, a LOT of variability... but on the other hand, there is no doubt the global average temperature is slowly rising... In other words, I think global warming is real, and we all need to think about ways to reduce/eliminate the problem, but the media can blow this out of proportion. The sad thing, in my opinion, is that when media makes sensational claims (that aren't true for everyone), that it makes people think it is not a real issue. The thing that I don't know, is if the media is too stupid to realize how they are "desensitizing" the public, or if they are covertly acting as agents for the status quo (oil companies, etc.) ? Knowing the complexities of modern life, I imagine it is a mix of both

I was in Arizona this summer in the Phoenix area. We had a stretch of 10 days or so where the temp exceeded 110 F. We had some tremendous monsoon storms mixed in with the tremendous heat. There is definitely a warming trend in the Sonoran desert. 116 F is nothing to sniff at. Yes, it's dry heat but 116 is a bitch no matter what. We had many days around 113-115 this summer. I am back in PA now surrounded by trees (and Commodores. There has been s lot of rain this year. This is a big El Niño year. This fall is just beautiful so far.

Thanks for your feedback, dunno128!
Sure, 116°F is harsh... but on the other hand, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico are all desert states... so this is not very shocking (but yes, it is above the average 113°F you claim).
More importantly (perhaps just me, but hopefully all who read this)... what is it like back in your home state of Pennsylvania? Normal / hot / cool ?
(P.S., also interesting you said mixed monsoon plus tremendous heat... they say global warming will MAXIMIZE extremes faster than raising temperatures... I don't know, but that sounds like a good example!)

We have highs in mid 80s and lows in upper 50s lower 60 right now. A little high.. It is dry now but was wet a lot earlier in the month. So a little more rain than usual and slightly higher temps.

Thanks for your feedback... highs in the mid 80s sounds sweet! I guess I should move to PA?! So slightly higher temps and more rain... we have slightly below-average temps here, but like you, we have more rain than usual... which I think is a GOOD thing because summer is usually quite dry around here ... (of course we are now moving into fall / out-of summer)
