Okay, I'll try to make this my last *serious* Windows-related post (I reserve the right to bash Microsoft in the future). I know I shouldn't post here, but Microsoft's forums seem to be infested with Trolls who bash anybody questioning the "wisdom" of new Microsoft releases (umm, paid actors or deluded believers? you decide). So I don't know a real good place for MS/Win questions... (if you can recommend I site, I would appreciate it).
Because I do I lot of Win programming on pre-Vista systems (2000, XP, 9x), I just now (!) realized a serious flaw with Windows Vista (and presumably 7 / 8 / 10, but not tested). So previously, when you "select" an item in a list (for example, a file in Windows Explorer), the item would be highlighted (typically blue background color). However you can also navigate through the list (without changing selection) using arrow keys.
In old versions (Win 2k/XP), the current position would be high-lighted with a dotted box. (Thus you can scroll through a list, and see where you are in the list, without changing your previously selected file).
But now, (Vista / 7+) the dotted box is gone. I can still scroll through a list without changing the current selection of file, but I have no idea where I am in the list... it is like typing blind... Very annoying.
Anybody else notice this bug? Is there a way to fix it? I can't find any options to change the behavior... (I'm sure MS would call this a feature, and not a bug)
My theory is this "bug" slipped through testing because many people exclusively use point-and-click, which is great for a 6-year-old child or a 70-year-old grandparent, but pathetically slow for me (or anybody else who values their time). This theory assumes MS actually did testing, as opposed to just rolling out a pile of crap without testing (refer to Windows 8 for proof).
