HIya,
Recently I was able to acquire a complete Commodore 128 system with the computer, a 1571 drive, a 1801 monitor, an a Okidata 120 printer for $150 locally along with two boxes of disks back on last Christmas. After plugging it in and making sure it is working and able to load a few of the disks, I boxed the systems back up (didn't have room living in an apartment) till recently. Now that I finally have a large enough room alone to display my computers, I plugged the 128 system back together minus the printer which I trashed.
Since I only used the C64 when I was a kid so I started reading up about the 128 and watched a few video on YouTube on preventive maintenance on these old machines like cleaning the 1571's drive heads as well as adding lubricant on the railing of the drive to cut down on wears and tears... and applying a new batch of thermal paste on some of the chips inside the 128. Should I even bother doing it and leave it as is since it is working as it is but I read that the shielding inside the 128 is not very good as a heat sink and I like to keep the machine running as long as I can.
Thanks for any advise.

really not a lot needs to be done for the 128 its a solid machine and the power supply is not a ticking time-bomb like the 64 supply the main issue I see in the 128`s is when c= used the garbage single wipe soctets , they give all sorts of issues, but you only need to fix that issue when it becomes a issue the shielding may not be the best but it is better than nothing and is ok , unlike the 64`s cardboard heat trap shielding turning the 64 into a easy bake oven adding/replacing the thermal compound is a good idea , as it tends to dry out over time , but still is nothing to panic over but if you are going to take it apart and do some cleaning , that would be a good time to also think of adding switchless jiffydos or a 64k vdc board or even a M5 megabit board to add a little spice to the 128

Thanks for the info. I will definitely going to take it apart partly to remove some of the yellowing on the case by doing a retrobrite treatment. As for adding other components to it, the only thing I will probably get is maybe a device like to load c64/128 disk image like the sdiec type of device. Other than that, I don't really plan to do much else with it. Might load up one of my favor game Archon from time to time and to teach the future generation of how older computer works.
Currently trying to find a working Amiga 500 to go with my collection without paying eBay's insane price.
