These instructions will provide you with video recording and ethernet options active as a normal user.
Vice 3-3/3-4 installation Fedora 29/30/31 with video and ethernet options
(as root)
Step 1 - prepare your OS
I used a normal, freshly installed Fedora 29 Workstation to start with.
Perform the following to ensure the OS is up to date and has the proper applications, libraries, headers, etc. required to compile VICE 3.3:
(rpm fusion--the https:// before each 'download1' text is hidden in this editor for some reason; please include that when you execute the dnf command below). Head to their web page if you like and for a copy/paste (rpm fusion webpage):
dnf install download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
dnf -y update
dnf -y groupinstall "Development Tools"
dnf -y install bison flex yasm xa gtk3-devel gcc-c++ libnet-devel libpcap-devel gstreamer1-libav ffmpeg compat-ffmpeg28 ffmpeg-devel giflib-devel libjpeg-devel pulseaudio-libs-devel alsa-lib-devel lame-devel glew-devel texinfo flac-devel
Step 2 - compile and run
**Note: you need to be root to perform these steps below. Compiling this requires elevated permissions while configuring, compiling, and installing. If you do not become root, compiling will fail.
First, cd into vice-3.3 and then perform the following commands:
./configure --enable-native-gtk3ui --enable-ethernet --with-gif --with-jpeg --enable-shared-ffmpeg --with-pulse --with-alsa
make; make install
setcap cap_net_raw=pe /usr/local/bin/x128
**(repeat for any other emulator that uses pcap for ethernet access).
Exit out of root with exit and become your normal user. Execute an x128 or an x64 and you’re good to go with all options available. All settings and such are stored in your own user directory and there is no need to use sudo or root to use vice for anything.
Because the gnomeui and such have been officially discontinued, the GTK3 menuing system is used. You’ll need to relearn where things are located as far as settings go.
To record a video or take a screenshot, select “Snapshot” pulldown menu and then “Record media file”. You’ll be presented with some tabs, select whichever you need. Video recording begins once you first click Save to provide the filename and where the file is put and then click Close.
Have fun!
