The 1541 Ultimate web site shows version 3.1a revision 495 as the most recent firmware. But it does not show which upgrades maybe specifically made for the C128. I did not realize that you need to login into the web site to see the upgrades. Interesting also that the version I have 2.6g (which came originally with the 1541UII) is not there to download.
Not much keen in upgrading firmware since it looks as if - so far - everything works OK.

Hi cdawe
I have a C128DCR with a 1541UII and I am able to run GEOS in 80c mode. However I am not clear on what you mean "to boot on the 128DCR in 80 column-mode".
You need to set the 1541UII in 40c mode and the restart in 80c. You cannot get to the 1541UII menu in 80c.
Try an experiment if you have a chance. Connect two monitors or 1 monitor and 1 TV to the C128DCR. Attach the monitor to the VDC output and the TV to the composite, and boot to normal screen in 80C. Press the middle button of the 1541UII and the menu will appear in the TV screen.
As far as settings I am using :
Note that the REU size can be changed with no impact to the others.

I was not worry about the PSU. I believe it can power the small fan. I am more concerned about the draw on the disk drive line. If that would cause any interference.

For a C128DCR.
So if I took a DC fan wire splitter (female to 2 male 3 pin) and split the power that goes to the disk drive to also run a fan, would I create permanent damage?
The fan is running and the drive does not show any problem - so far .

Installing software on a C128 is not something that can be done as the same concept as installing software on a HD of an IBM computer (or PC compatible)
But, from here you can download a set of tools that run under DOS that will allow your C128 to use the HD of the PC. You also need an X-type of cable.
www.64hdd.com/64hdd.html
With that you can run images on D64 (and I believe D71 and D81) saved on your PC from the C128.

Great news indeed. Now I can bring more stuff without the worry of taking down and setting up again.
