At last Saturday's FCUG meeting, we opened up the Blue Chip 128 drive. Member Louis M. had the honor of disassembling the drive. Though the outside of the drive was grungy and yellowed, the interior of the drive was clean. First, we noticed the quality of the hardware and how compact the drive was in comparison to a 1571 drive. On the casing, there were machine screws with lock washers. When the top of the casing was removed, we saw that the entire top of the mechanism was covered by a solid, shiny, metal plate held in place by metal columns to the bottom of the casing. When the plate was removed, the main motherboard was revealed. Ah-ha, the board had been worked on! There was a CMD JiffyDOS v5.05 chip installed. However, when Louis looked at the underside of the board, he had bad news. There was a scorch mark. High heat had burned the board in one spot. We looked at the top of the board again and noticed that the scorch led to a lifted trace and a resistor. Perhaps that was the reason that the drive did not respond to any disk command. It will have to go to Ray Carlsen for repair. Hey, when will you be in Crawley? That's only like an hour away from Central London by train and it would be good to meet you again

...when Louis looked at the underside of the board, he had bad news. There was a scorch mark. High heat had burned the board in one spot. We looked at the top of the board again and noticed that the scorch led to a lifted trace and a resistor. Perhaps that was the reason that the drive did not respond to any disk command. It will have to go to Ray Carlsen for repair. I believe I mentioned some of this in the Maker Faire topic found elsewhere on this site; Ray Carlsen repaired all, and the BC 128 disk drive was used at Maker Faire... but only for 1/2 hour, because it stopped reading disks. In June when I was up in Washington state for the Pacific Commodore Expo, I left it with Ray again for a check-up. On the way out of Washington, I picked up the drive, Ray declaring that everything had tested o.k.. So, the only thing I can surmise is that the BC 128 gets extremely hot at the rear bottom of its casing. Even with an external power supply, the voltage regulation is going on within the main case. When it gets that hot, then it stops reading disks. Must think of a method to cool it, Robert Bernardo Fresno Commodore User Group www.dickestel.com/fcug.htmJuly 29-30 Commodore Vegas Expo v13 - www.portcommodore.com/commvex
