What if basic was patched in c64 mode to use vdc mem as variable mem? would be clunky but, an interesting thought experiment.

If you'd asked a few months ago, I would have said it would be too impractical to patch BASIC to get variables from someplace else. I always got the impression that variable handling was so low-level in BASIC you would have to patch a bunch of code...
But a while back I read about some BASIC enhancement for the C64 that gives your subroutines local variables. It sounds pretty cool, but I haven't tried, nor know how it works... I don't even remember what it is called.
So that shows you can redirect BASIC variable handling, so if you can figure out how that works, then redirecting it to VDC RAM should be pretty simple.
