I am really thinking the SD drive will be the way to go for me, just curious how others have fared with it. In the meantime I have done typed in the Automatic Proof Reader and am working on my first type in program.

I'm using the µIEC. I like it and have been using it mostly to load one-file programs like tools and games for Vic20 and +4. It isn't working well enough for modern games and demos for C64 and 128. I also have a 1541 Ultimate II but I rarely use it since the memory card swapping is too cumbersome. I mostly transfer to real disks instead and recycle the contents on a handful of disks.

SD2IEC works great for me. I mean it doesn't support real floppy disk, so most copy-protected programs (99% of commericial) will not run. However D64 disk image (used by SD2IEC) supports simple error-emulation (lame copy-protection), and beyond that, many cracked versions of formerly commercial software are available online. I like the SD2IEC because it is easy to copy single file or complete disk image to SD card with a PC then run on C128/SD2IEC. It is also faster than real 1541, and with JiffyDOS in your C128 it runs almost as fast as 1571. However JiffyDOS can cause compatibility problems in some cases... If you have firmware for SD2IEC upgraded for fast-serial, then in C128 and CP/M modes, the SD2IEC will run faster than either the 1571 or 1581, and (from reports) faster than CMD Hard Disk Drive. But fast-serial doesn't work in 64-mode, so if use mostly C64 software, then the JiffyDOS speeds are usually the best you can get.
Anyway, good luck grizzlyadam!

Can I write images to the floppy drive with it?

Hmm, I've never read any reports about the SD2IEC being faster than a CMD hard drive (especially if the CMD hard drive is connected via its parallel connection to a RAMLink). Where did you find such reports? Can I write images to the floppy drive with it? That's what I do. Download a .D64 to the SD card. Move the SD card to the SD2IEC. Run a disk utility, like d64it or d128it (both really prefer a 1541 drive). Follow the menu instructions to dearchive the .D64 from the SD card to a floppy disk. Voila! After a few minutes of waiting, you will have created a program disk. Great. Do any similar programs like 1571s?

Do any similar programs like 1571s? d64it and d128it only work sometimes with 1571's. As for other Commodore programs, I don't know. Perhaps CBM-Command would work.
