Has anyone checked out the new computer being developed called the C256 Foenix? It is being developed as a successor to the C128 as if it were developed in 1987. It is using the WDC 65C816 CPU @ 14 MHz and looks like it is going to be pretty cool:
Well, the way that Dave Haynie was planning it, there would have been no C64 compatibility.
I don't think that would have been a bad thing. I think if the C128 didn't have C64 compatibility it maybe would have had more of a software base. Besides there were what a few million C64s by the time C128 was released. You didn't have to lose compatibility with the C64 if you kept your C64.

Perhaps. However, after the Plus/4 disaster, CBM was looking for a sure-fire hit, and what would be more sure-fire than C64 compatibility. The same with the C256... its success would have been doubtful. A better bet (which proved to be true) was to throw all your eggs behind the planned Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000.
I was at beginning of C256 specs creation with Stefany, we were talking also about C128 and I told all my known perfect C128 features, also I suggested dual CPU system - but Stefany selected MC68010 and later we both abandoned. When I see progress in development, specs and the way of C256 I saw that's far from Commodore machines - I think it has minimum of Commodore like features and also I thinkthat it is far from C256 original prototype, so I focused to other way.
In my eyes is very good platforum M65 - Commodore 65 is computer I ever wanted and at beginning of project (when was yet unknown and only one source was Paul's blog) I saw that it looks cool - but wrong thing happened - Commodore 64 users take it as their computer like any expanded C64 and even Paul forgot that it has C65 features and whole its scene talks only about C64 - like it always was - in their eyes exist only one and for them best computer - C64. But this is not truth - easiest example is C128 and we all know why is C64 less - and C65 resp. M65 fate is much more wrong than C128... If I buy M65, I do it for C65 possibilities only. It will be again used like C128 - never use C64 mode and if, only when I must. My favorite always stay C128.
Whole world sees only single machine from Commodore and it is not fair! Miro
Commodore 64 was great, Commodore 128 is bigger, better, faster and more powerful... Commodore 65 was almost here, but C256 is coming and it will be earthquake...
She is going to finish it, but after that wants nothing more to do with it. The Commander X16 basically screwed her. The Mega65 is nice, but I fear it will be too expensive and doesn't have a market due to it being so long in development. I fear that CX16 is starting to loose steam as well. The Apple people have got their fingers in it and its getting muddled. But I can't see if shipping anytime soon the OS and docs are struggling. Most drive bys have got the emulator and had a play with it, and be content already.
I wonder how the ZX Next is doing, are people actually buying new games for it, or has it become a nice novelty item.
