Found a C128 on c-list locally for $50, came in original box with power supply. Seller said it powered on but could not test further. I bought a video to component cable online and when it came it tested it out. The C128 mode works perfectly, nice clear picture. When I power it up into C64 mode the display is equally as nice however I notice on the letter E , the middle horizontal line has a twinkling vertical line through it. If I make a row of EEEEEEEEE they all have that middle line, some wiggle a little. It's not a deal breaker but I know it's not supposed to be there because I had C64's and 128's as a kid.
I read somewhere about it might be the character rom chip so I ordered one online, seller said it was good for C64 or 128's. It is the MOS 901225-01 chip. It came and I opened the 128 up, there are only 2 chips on the main board, soldered directly to it but neither have this part number. Is it really compatible?
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I agree that the culprit is the character-rom chip. Take one out of another old 128, if you can. I wouldn't rely on the "online sellers" who claim much but only want to make a buck. If it's soldered onto the board this might be hard, especially if your eyes are failing like mine are. I have read how experts suggest putting a socket in before you replace the chip. If John Ianetta is still alive (good luck finding him online), he could tell you EXACTLY what is wrong with it, right down to the last resistor. He was a forum administrator on Compuserve, back in the day and he helped me fix my C128 DCR, back in 1998. Told me to de-solder one chip etc, that my problems would be over (had a defective built-in 1571 at the time). It worked after taking his advice and I was amazed. The dude was a GENIUS and finally I could use an external drive as device #8 in place of the defective drive.
