Hi!
Always when is talking about Z80 CPU inside C128 words saying that is downclocked to ~2,5MHz for VIC2E sync. I was searching about this and found some confusing and doubting info to words written above.
Z80 was manufacturing in NMOS and CMOS version. Here are most known models (also most used):
NMOS Z80 = 2,5 MHz
NMOS Z80A = 4 MHz
NMOS Z80B = 6 MHz
NMOS Z80H = 8 MHz
CMOS Z80 = 4 MHz up to 20 MHz
So, when we are talking about Z80 then NMOS version is not downclocked, CMOS version is. When we look at A, B and H version we can see downclocking.
So, Q is here: Which version of Z80 has C128 inside? And is it NMOS or CMOS version?
Thank you for every reply.

Hi,
I think the clock of the processor is round 2,5 Mhz, for a compatibility with the C128.

I know that CPU is at 2,5MHz - but is it downclocked A or B or H version? Or original Z80 or CMOS without downclocking?

The 128’s Z80 runs at 4MHz during the unmodified part of the clock cycle. Averaging that with the part at 1 or 2 (don’t recall which at the moment) MHz is where the 2.5 MHz figure comes from. I have no idea what process technology it was made with, though. The 8502 is made with HMOS-II.

All C128s, as far as I know, use a Z80-A ... thus 4MHz *maximum* speed. However, I think most of us know that CBM clocked the chip at 1/2 speed (2MHz). I am still hopeful that a hack will be published to enabled full (4MHz) speed.. I've done some investigation on the topic, but (so far) have not found a complete solution :sigh:

The C128 which I had in the old days had Z80B, which I now have have Z80A.

This Commodore 128D-CR motherboard has a Zilog Z80B processor.

Hello!
does anyone know which is the part number of Z80 for a C128 if I ant to order it from Digikey or Mouser for example?
I found this for example in Digikey:
Z84C0006PEG DigiKey Part Number: 269-3892-ND
Manufacturer: Zilog
Manufacturer Product Number: Z84C0006PEG Description: IC MPU Z80 6MHZ 40DIP -----------------------
will it work in my C128?
