I have recently unpacked all my old Commodore gear from storage and started testing it to see what works and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. (I have parts of three different 128 systems, plus a bunch of games and other programs.) I'm getting ready to list one of the Commodore 128s for sale, and plan to keep the 128DCR and possibly the other 128, but I've encountered a problem with the disk drive and was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction as to what could be the issue. When I turn on the power, I get the copyright message, but the machine hangs and never displays a READY prompt. The red light on the internal disk drive is blinking slowly, and the motor is spinning. I found some troubleshooting information here: personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm/1571/1571diag.txtSpecifically, I found the following that might be relevant: The problem is, I can't seem to find anything labeled U3 on my board (probably the troubleshooting info is for a discrete disk drive unit) nor can I locate any chip with a M2128 or TMM2016 label on it. Accordingly, I thought I'd post here and see if maybe someone more familiar with troubleshooting these could point me in the right direction. Below is a link to a Photobucket album with detailed pictures of the motherboard and disk drive assembly for reference. Yes, they are compatible. Looking at your photos, U103 is not socketed, so needs to be desoldered to be replaced. That is not an easy task (I would not do it). Did you check if all the ROMs are 'seated' properly? Because they get hot, the pins of the ICs expand a little and tend to 'creep' out of the socket, making bad contact. Also sometimes they come loose during transportation. All socketed ICs are ROMs except the two lower left from the middle, those are the processors (8502 and Z80). Just press on them firmly, to reseat them. But beware of static electricity, do not touch the pins and ground/discharge yourself beforehand. (Touch something metal, a heating pipe for example)

I removed and reseated the 318047-01 ROM chip at U102 (I believe that one is the ROM for the internal 1571) and that didn't help. The other ROMs on there (318022-02, 318023-02, and 390059-01) are the BASIC ROMs and character ROM, and then there are the two processors and the 8580 SID. I suppose it's possible the 1571 ROM chip could be the culprit, but I don't have any spares of that, and although I have an external 1571, my guess is those two are not interchangeable. I'd rather not fiddle with the other ROMs or processors if I don't have to. I did inspect them closely and push down on them to make sure they're seated properly, but since everything else seems functional I don't think those are the issue. I suppose it's possible the 1571 ROM is bad, but I'd have to track one down first. As far as desoldering/replacing the other chip, I've done that kind of thing before, so I know how to do it safely. I also own a flat C128, and I upgraded the VDC memory in that to 64K, which required me to desolder the old RAM and replace it.
