I picked up a 1571 disk drive on eBay for $10. The seller said it powers on but "didn't test further" which usually means that "it's broken". The price was reasonable though, so I went ahead and bought it thinking there might be salvageable parts. When I received the drive, it wouldn't even power on, so I notified the seller and they refunded my money and told me to keep it, since they're filing a damage claim with the shipper (the case was cracked and the box it came in was crushed). Rather than throw it out, I thought I'd test the individual components to see if anything still worked. This is what I found when I opened the case to check on the PSU:
I think I'm just going to follow the lead of this guy and get a new switching PSU at some point.
After disconnecting and removing the old PSU, I hooked up the working one from my other 1571 drive, but although the power light comes on and the drive spins up briefly, the C128 gives me an error when I try to access it. It won't give me a directory or boot a CP/M disk, so I put the PSU back in my working 1571, took out the actual disk drive, and swapped in the one from the bad unit. SUCCESS!! At the very least, I now have an extra drive unit in case the one in my 1571 or my 128D goes kaput at some point. That done, I thought I'd take a closer look at the logic board and see if I could spot any obvious issues:
The one on the left is the non-working one. Has anyone seen anything like this before? It looks like someone either attempted to mod it, or possibly it was some sort of prototype board. I'm mystified... that was totally not what I was expecting to see when I cracked this thing open. Is this something that's worth repairing, or should I just keep it on hand in case I need to borrow one of the ICs for something else?
