This is the area to discuss programming drives of types, from tape drives to hard disk, and everything in between.

I love this topic... I will try to dig-up / consolidate all my info on this topic. I am more into floppy drives, but know enough about tapes and hard drives to be "dangerous"!

csdb.dk/release/?id=81316That's my old tool for use additional space on the disk on the illegal track's 36/41-42 We can talk about programming drives. I tried still compatibile between 1571/70/1541C/1541 II (1570/71 in single mode (GCR) without MFM of course). Some times like here www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q76ZepI_44Y you can do realtime 3d vertex calculated in drive. Sadly here is 2KB of RAM only. About tape is really little to say. Only ABC turbo. Sometimes people done IRQ tape loaders, but allways tape was very very slow. Even in ABC turbo

The best thing I ever found in magazines was the one that made it possible to create subdirectories on a 1541 using the "&" file technique and was published in an older "64'er" article from Markt&Technik

The "&" is a command that only a CBM drive can recognize and if you send its name to a drive it is executed within the drive's memory but it needs a checksum. Essentially, what this particular code did was to re-write the normal directory-track pointers to somewhere else on the disk which made validating the disk impossible (unless you were willing to lose your data). As I remember, there were two such disk commands in that issue. One changed to the (new) subdirectory and the other re-wrote it to its original values. A pretty slick setup if you ask me.
Check the 1541 manual or one of the other ones. Instructions pertaining to how "&" is used should be in there somewhere.
